Description
Wa Shogi is a large version of Shogi played in Japan. This version was reported in a manuscript that was known to exist in 1834, but the exact date that it was authored is unknown.
Rules
11x11 board. Pieces for each player are as follows: Gissha (x1): moves any distance orthogonally forward, promotes to Sengyu, which moves one space in any direction, begins in left corner; Moken (x1): moves on space in any direction except orthogonally forward or diagonally back, promoted to Moro, which moves one space in any direction except diagonally back, begins to right of Gissha; Uko (x1): moves one space orthogonally forwar or diagonally back, promotes to Hiyo, which moves any distance diagonally, begins to the right of Moken; Ganhi (x1): moves one space diagonally or forward orthogonally, promotes to En'u which moves any distance horizontally or one space orthogonally forward or back, begins to the right of the Uke; Moro (x1): moves one space in any direction except diagonally backward, promotes to Yugan which moves one space in any direction, begins to the right of the Ganhi; Kakugyoku (x1): moves one space in any direction, no promotion, begins to the right of Moro; Moroku (x1): moves one space diagonally or one space orthogonally backward, promotes to Gyocho, which moves one space in any direction except orthogonally backward, begins to the right of the Kakugyoku; Keihi (x1): moves one space diagonally forward or orthogonally backward, promotes to En'yo which moves any distance orthogonally forward or backward or one space diagonally forward or orthogonally backward, begins to the right of the Moroku; Shigyo (x1): moves one space orthogonally forward or diagonally backward, promotes to Unju which moves any distance orthogonally forward or backward, diagonally forward up to three spaces, or one space orthogonally horizontal or diagonally backward, begins to the right of Keihi; Toen (x1): moves one space diagonally, promotes to Moroku which moves one space diagonally or orthogonally forward, begins to the right of Shigyo; Fuma (x1): moves any distance orthogonally forward or up to two spaces diagonally backward, promotes to Temma, which moves up to three spaces diagonally, beings in right corner; Hiyo (x1): moves any distance diagonally or one space orthogonally forward, promotes to Keiyo which moves any distance orthogonally forward or backward, or one space diagonally or orthogonally horizontal, begins in front of Moken; En'u (x1): moves any distance orthogonally horizontal, or one space orthogonally forward or backward, promotes to Engyo, which moves any distance orthogonally, beings in front of Kakugyoku; Unju (x1): moves any distance forward or backward orthogonally, up to three spaces diagonally, or one space diagonally backward or orthogonally horizontal, begins in front of Toen; Jakufu (x11): move one space forward orthogonally, promotes to Kincho, which moves one space in any direction except diagonally backward, begins in the three spaces in the third row on the left, in the center, and on the right, and one in front of the Inko and one in front of the Soto; Inko (x1): moves one space orthogonally forward or backward or diagonally up to two sapces, no promotion, begins to the right of the three leftmost Jakufu; Soto (x1): moves one space orthogonally forward or backward or diagonally backward one space or any distance forward, no promotion, begins to the left of the rightmost three Jakufu.
