I just tried and that works perfectly well here.
Just maybe that rule is confusing you:
"Throws of 1, 4, and 8 grant the player another throw. Players make all of the throws in their turn first, and then move the values of the throws individually"
That means if during his turn the player is getting a throw of 1, 4 or 8, he continues to throw the dice until he get a different throw. Then at that moment he can use any throw gotten in his previous moves and the last one. Example:
I get 1 then I get 8 then I get 2.
At that moment I can use a 1, a 2 or a 8 to play.
So only at that moment if that's the first move, he can enter a piece with the 1. Then he can use the 2 and 8 to move the piece just entered.
