By re-implementing the game using extra pieces defined with absolute directions (piece rotations in the graphic meta definitions) I was able to work around the issue of piece orientations (as standard orientations in the piece definitions) not showing up in the selection popups. However, defining the extra pieces by orientation would have allowed a more natural way of defining the rules.
Using multiple pieces is better than using one of each piece and orienting it during placement, as that becomes 2 separate actions per turn.
Thus I am submitting the attached script, that significantly improves the playablility of the game.
Please use it to replace the existing version.
