Error in Hnefatafl - luciolet - 08-30-2021

Hello Ludii team,

Thanks for implementing one of my favorite lesser know games.
I was playing around with it for testing and noticed a behavior that was not accurate to the rules.

Units other than the Jarl/King should not be able to go on the center square which works fine but they should however be able to go through it which is not possible at the moment.

Given the unknown nature of Hnefatafl's true rules, I feel you might even include the current version of the rules as an optional rule set but it shouldn't be the default one at least.

Thanks for the help and best regards,

L.

Hi,

Concerning the rules of Hnefatafl which are implemented, I did them in following the English rules that Walter was about to find from pieces of evidence, so I will have to check with him when he's back from his holidays (next week).
We are coming back to you in a week.

Regards,
Eric

Hi L,

Thanks for pointing that out. For Hnefatafl, we have implemented rulesets that have been suggested by people interested in the game for evaluation purposes. We had the error in the Fetlar ruleset, which does explicitly say that the Jarl cannot occupy the central (or also the corner!) spaces.

Do you have a preferred ruleset that you have played that is not in Ludii? We can include it if you can send it (or a link to it) to us.

We are also presented with another issue: can pieces other than the Jarl move through those forbidden spaces but not land on them? It's not explicitly stated in many of the rulesets we have. Maybe the rules you are familiar with clarifies this?

Anyway, thanks for letting us know about this, feel free to point out anything else you may notice!

Best,
Walter
