Katro bevohaka - Alain Busser - 04-25-2024

Hello,

here is a game played by children in Madagascar, in order to learn to play katro later (get familiar with the board, the moves). It has been seen by an ethnomathematician who did not publish anything about it yet.

(By the way, on the highlands, they spell katro and not katra)

Have a nice play, even if you are not children!

RE: Katro bevohoka - Alain Busser - 05-02-2024

Two bugs for now:
  • If the sowing ends in a nonempty hole (other than the "bevohoka" I guess), one must sow again from this hole, in the same direction that one choosed at the beginning of the turn.
  • One can choose the direction of the sowing at the beginning of the turn (as in katra: not at the beginning of the game but at the beginni g of the turn.

I corrected the first bug in the included file. For the second one I find it more difficult. And I guess there should be an exception for the hole which has been choosed to be filled during the game because if not, the game is too complicated to play imho.

There might be some documented information available about katro itself. Searching online for "karo game Madagascar" or "traditional board games Madagascar" might yield some results.
Thank you again for sharing this interesting piece of cultural information!
