Gale (AKA Bridg-It) - QuaGamer - 09-08-2020

There is a Wikipedia entry with rules at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shannon_switching_game#Gale.

The size of the game board should not be limited to 6x6. Even though it is proven the first player can alway win with perfect play, much like tic-tac-toe is always a draw with perfect play, it is fun to go second and try to win.

I believe this game would also be a good candidate to use to test AI players in a competition (Especially Gale Misere).

Hi,

Good suggestion, I've added it to the wishlist.

Thanks!

Check out this thread on BGG for a very simple implementation of Bridg-it.
All you need is a starting setup, and then after that it is simple placement with a connection goal on a square board.

Thanks! yes this is what I was thinking of too.

RE: Gale (AKA Bridg-It) - QuaGamer - 09-12-2020

I have implemented Gale with options for Board Size and the Misere End Game option. Playing against the Ludii 1.0 AI Player, I was able to win Gale Misere as Player 1 pretty consistently (Player 2 connects their sides first).

Since Gale is a solved game for Standard play, I wonder if there is also a known strategy for always winning Gale Misere as Player 2. The Ludii 1.0 AI player is good but not perfect as Player 2 in Gale Misere with board size 6.

This would be an interesting AI competition challenge :-).

The current Gale.lud file is attached.

There is a bug in the code for Gale Board Size 3. The graphic (and the meaning) for the P1 and P2 regions is incorrect.

RE: Gale (AKA Bridg-It) - QuaGamer - 09-27-2020

Bug fixed. Size expanded to 7x7. Colours changed to Yellow and Blue. Board colour changed from Blue to Gray. Player pieces changed from Ball to Square.  Version changed to 1.0.7. See attached.
