Licensing information of the game descriptions - porges - 08-28-2020

Hello,

Is there any licensing or copyright information for the game descriptions (in allGames.zip on the downloads page). I haven't been able to locate any; if someone wanted to make their own interpreter for the Ludii language could they reuse these descriptions?

Thanks!
George

Hi George,

We don't have any specific license or copyright associated with each .lud file as such, but we distinguish between two levels of privacy:

1. Proprietary: These are .lud descriptions of games with proprietary owners or publishers who have not given us permission to release descriptions of their games. We might maintain such .lud privately and use them for internal tests, but they are not included in the Ludii distribution and are not made publicly available.

2. Public domain: All other .lud files. Ludii is a product of European Research Council funding so we make the research outputs including .lud descriptions public domain where we can.

We have metadata items for:

(author ...) which should contain the author/designer of the game,
(publisher ...) which should contain publisher details, and
(credit ...) which should contain details about the person who wrote the .lud file. That person can put any license or copyright info they want in this item.

If anyone wants to make their own interpreter for the .lud descriptions then they are free to do so, but I would appreciate it if they duly acknowledge Ludii as the source and include  links to http://ludii.games in the resulting product.

The (credit ...) details for each .lud file should not be modified.

But before writing a .lud interpreter, the person might want to check the 1,000+ ludemes and constants in the Ludii Language Reference to get an idea of the job they'd be facing... :)

Regards,
Cameron
